About Vitoss Bone Graft Substitute

As new technologies are developed, surgeons have more options from which to choose. Your surgeon may decide to use an alternative to autograft, cadaver bone, or bone-morphogenetic protein (BMP) such as a synthetic bone graft like Vitoss (vee-toss). Vitoss is FDA-cleared for use in bone grafting procedures of the spine, pelvis, and extremities.

What is Vitoss? Vitoss is a completely synthetic biomaterial made from calcium and phosphate, and has been engineered to resemble the structure and chemistry of natural bone tissue. In conjunction with Vitoss, many surgeons will elect to minimally invasively harvest stem cells through bone marrow aspiration during the procedure. This is done through a special 3 – 4 mm needle (~ 1/8") at the time of surgery. The bone marrow aspirate (BMA) is then added to Vitoss.

In order for new bone to form, three critical elements are required: osteoconductive scaffold (or a surface for bone to grow on, in, and through), osteogenic cells (the cells that produce bone), and osteoinductive signals (proteins/molecules that tell the cells what to do) – see Figure 5 below.

The patented and optimized structure, porosity, bioactivity and chemistry of Vitoss lead to the three-dimensional regeneration of bone. Vitoss BA leads to stronger, more abundant bone growth in a shorter period of time through the release of cell-activating ions.

Use of Vitoss

Vitoss is the market leading synthetic bone graft and has been safely implanted more than 300,000 times worldwide. More than 18 human clinical evaluations with Vitoss have been performed in over 800 patients undergoing spinal surgery - demonstrating Vitoss’s equivalence to the historical gold standard (iliac crest (hip) autograft) in achieving fusion rates. Vitoss is resorbed over the course of normal bone healing and replaced by natural host bone tissue, allowing a successful fusion to occur.
