Cortoss - Technical Specifications - Bioactivity & Bone Bonding
- Combeite bioactive glass-ceramic particles
- Glass-ceramic particles release alkali into the immediate environment, due to ion exchange with body fluid
- Alkali environment induces deposition of Calcium Phosphate
- Calcium Phosphate is slowly converted to bone
- Histologic evidence indicates Cortoss® achieves fixation in two stages:
- Immediate mechanical interlock into bone (interdigitation)
- Direct surface bonding without intervening fibrous layer
- Calcium phosphate-rich layer allows newly formed bone to grow in apposition along the Cortoss® surface
