Cortoss - Technical Specifications - Bioactivity & Bone Bonding

  • Combeite bioactive glass-ceramic particles
  • Glass-ceramic particles release alkali into the immediate environment, due to ion exchange with body fluid
  • Alkali environment induces deposition of Calcium Phosphate
  • Calcium Phosphate is slowly converted to bone
  • Histologic evidence indicates Cortoss® achieves fixation in two stages:
    • Immediate mechanical interlock into bone (interdigitation)
    • Direct surface bonding without intervening fibrous layer
  • Calcium phosphate-rich layer allows newly formed bone to grow in apposition along the Cortoss® surface
